Discipleship as Missions: Obedience

When I think about what it means to be a fully devoted follower of Christ I think about that special willingness and faithfulness to do what is asked. I think about Noah who was asked to build an arc. I think about Isaiah who said, “Yes I am here, and I will go” I think about Levi, the tax collector who also said, “Yeah, I will follow.” I think about Paul who met Jesus in desert. I think about how they not only said they were willing to go/do, but actually did. I also think about the rich guy who wanted to follow Jesus, but couldn’t bring himself to give up...

Missions as Discipleship: Prayer

I have seen hundreds of students lives transformed by Christ through short-term missions trips. It has become one of my main pillars of discipleship within my own life and in my student ministry.   I can not separate missions from our student ministry. If I do, it eliminates one of my biggest discipleship tools I have ever had. I have seen missions transform my student ministry year after year as it has helped me and my students live out our faith in a fresh and real way. Discipleship: Activity, Results or Obedience?

Over the years, I’ve crossed paths with many youth leaders/pastors who just can’t agree on what a “fully-devoted follower of Jesus” looks like. Believe it or not, I still stand by that answer. However, the answer deserves a more thorough explanation.   Let me suggest a shift in how we come to the conclusion of the question. First, our society is massively focused on results....

Are They a Judas or a Peter?

Every year that I lead a student mission trip there are always at least a couple of students that tell me they are interested in going on the trip, and I have to seriously consider IF I should allow them to go.   You know the kids because they are in your group too. It’s the student who seems spiritually disinterested whenever you teach and doesn’t participate in his small group. It’s the guy that just got busted for doing drugs two weeks ago. It’s the girl who told you just a few months ago that she isn’t sure she believes in Christianity anymore...

Welcome to the Conversation

This is a discussion forum for youth workers created by youth workers. The goal is to help each other.  Potentially this blog will cover topics such as prayer, training, preparation, leadership, parent involvement, and returning home from trips.    Essentially, we want to equip and inspire each other to use missions as a catalyst for the discipleship of young people. The reason we got into youth work is the calling and passion to see young people become fully devoted followers of Christ. We know Jesus called and sent us to make disciples. That is why we do what we do in...

Missions and Discipleship

Welcome This is a discussion forum about missions and discipleship — for youth workers by youth workers. The goal is to help each other process and prepare, to encourage and challenge one another to make disciples.   Yes, this is a blog about short-term mission trips, but it’s also more the big picture: discipleship.   The reason that you we got involved in youth ministry in the first place was because of the passion to see young people become devoted followers of Christ. We know Jesus sent us to make disciples. Plain and simple. So, how do we do that?...
